12 Little Habits that Make Your Life More Enjoyable
With small changes you can get a lot done. Looking for inspiration? Here you will find 12 little routines that make your life more and more fun. Discover the power of habit!
# 1. Wake up little bit earlier
If you just have a bit more time everyday – where would you use that time? Maybe you would do some yoga or strength training. Maybe meditate, write in your diary or take some time to prepare a healthy meal.
A quarter hour, 15 minutes extra will give you a lot of opportunities to make your life more enjoyable. And you can magically get these fifteen minutes by waking up earlier. Simply change your sleep schedule and exchange nighttime for morning time.
In the evening you are tired and maybe you do not want to do useful things. In the morning you are equipped and you can make time to start your day consciously. This is much better than running around rushed through the morning.
# 2. Focus on one thing at a time
Stop fragmenting your attention, and just do one thing at a time with full attention. That means you turn off distractions and stop jumping from task to task.
When you are doing something with full attention you are more productive, quieter, more effective and happier. And it also takes much less energy.
# 3. Restrict useless screen time
How often do you hang out on your smartphone without trying to reach a specific goal? And I’m not talking about entertainment. No, I’m talking about the moments when you’re refreshing your Facebook or Instagram feeds because you’re bored, while nothing new appears. Or you open apps you’ve already checked – out of habit.
Be aware of these of ‘dead’ smartphone moments. If you think you are doing nothing – then give yourself the luxury to do really nothing.
Turn off that screen and come to the moment. Observe the world around you and take a moment of mindfulness. Being really mindful a few times a day makes miracles for your mood.
# 4. Read more books that enrich your life
A good book can improve your life forever. Books can help you develop new ideas, learn new skills, deal with issues better, look at your life in a different way, and simply become a better version of yourself.
If you take time every day to read for half an hour, you can easily read a book every week and it will help you move forward to your dreams and goals. Not bad if you think about it.
Ask yourself: What problems do I always encounter? There are probably books written about it which you can order now or can borrow from the library.
# 5. Waste less time on useless activities
We all do useless things. As in things that do not increase our quality of life. Like cleaning up a full shed full of stuff you never use. Or answering emails you might encounter with some more information on your website. Or picking up, collecting and recycling unwanted mail which you can avoid with a sticker “No, I dont want unsolicited mail”
Or going to a birthday party you have dreaded for a week. Parties are meant to be fun. If you do not like it – why do you go?
Challenge yourself not to live on auto-pilot and regularly ask yourself: why do I do this? You don’t find a logical reason? Then figure out how to throw this activity out of your life.
The fewer unnecessary things you do, the more time and energy you keep for the things that make you happy. Logical.
# 6. Invest in a happy body
Without a body, you have no life. If your body works well, your quality of life will not be hindered by your health. And that’s really worth it.
Eat more fruits and vegetables, eat less junk, move sufficiently and meditate regularly. Make your body happy. Simple.
# 7. Dare to go outside your comfort zone
You grow fastest when you come out of your comfort zone. So dare to challenge yourself and stepping outside your comfort zone. Do things that you find a little scary and increase your comfort zone step-by-step.
You do not have to suddenly jump into the deep if you do not want to. You can take small steps and grow gradually.
The greater your comfort zone, the more freedom you have. And that freedom makes everything easier and more fun. It will make your world bigger.
I know people who do not travel by subway or train. Or won’t drive on the highway by car. These kinds of fears make life unnecessarily limited (fear of leaving comfort zone). Challenge yourself in small steps. Because life is really fun outside your comfort zone.
# 8. Write your goals
What do you want to achieve? By regularly writing your list of personal goals down on paper, you keep your brain focused. This makes it easier to stay on track. This will help you achieve your goals faster with less effort.
It’s very simple. If you have a goal you’d like to achieve (and such goals we all have), write them up daily. For example, in your diary.
This simple act helps you faster than you would expect. Because you’re sitting on the couch in the evening and suddenly thinking, oh, if I want to achieve that goal, maybe I’ll get busy on that now!
# 9. Work smarter, not harder
Hard work is valuable. But only if you use it as a means, not as an goal on it’s own.
For example, it does not make sense to work hard to hand wash the laundry if you have a washing machine.
You can always work hard. But if you want something to get done, it’s very important to work smartly. To think strategically, look for things that take the least amount of effort for the most results.
Once you’ve identified those places, it’s worth working hard because you know that you are working on the right tasks.
# 10. Cherish the relationships that matter to you
Why? Because research after research shows that the relationships in our lives determine how happy we really are.
And the older you become, the more important your relationships become. Because you are stronger, you realize that success, popularity, wealth and status mean nothing if you do not have meaningful relationships.
Relationships can be complicated, messy and difficult. But that is life: Everything worth it is worthwhile.
So do not look the other way if it becomes difficult. Embrace the challenge of developing yourself into a loving person full of compassion. It’s a challenging journey that can fill you with satisfaction and surround you with love.
# 11. Experience the moment
A great life is built from great moments. And great moments are simple. These are not just the moments when you are lifting the glass on great successes. No – it’s also the simple moments when you’re on the couch and right now.
A bird in the garden, soft noise of the street, the boiler that boils, sunbeams on the wall, dust particles in the sky. The pressure of the pillows on your back, the garment under your feet, your socks, your pants, all these things, and more, have the potential to create great moments.
Being mindful creates great moments. Such moments are building stones of a more enjoyable life. And the more often you can experience such moments, the better your life will feel.
# 12. Write in your diary
Yes. Write down what’s happening in your life, what you think of. What your worries are. Put your thoughts in a row, take them out of your mind.
And then – very important – note what you are grateful for.
Just a few things what made you happy today. A nice breakfast, your family, the things that went well at work, a conversation with a friend, good music or your dishwasher.
There is so much to be grateful for. On a daily basis the stronger you become aware of this, the happier you will feel.
By writing this daily you train your brain to develop a gratitude radar that constantly scans the environment to things to be grateful for. And that’s a nice radar to have.
Use these good habits for life.
